What if I told you the smartest people in the world understand something that the rest of us don't? (They do.) What if they know that in order to achieve success, they will sometimes have to do things that others may initially perceive as stupid? The fact of the matter is that the smartest people in the world don't run from stupid, they lean into it (in a smart way).
My name is Zach Johnson. I'm Co-Founder and CEO of TempSumo and the paragraph above is the premise of Richie Norton's book The Power of Starting Something Stupid. It's also the book that got the wheels turning in the mind of my co-founder Teki Koloa.
While working on an assembly line at a factory outside Salt Lake City, Teki saw the same issues over and over again when it came to sourcing and recruiting workers.
Issue 1: When using traditional staffing firms, employers face high markup rates, workers face low wages and productivity suffers.
Issue 2: When employers posted these entry level, hourly positions to a job board, it produced a thick stack of resumes and contact information but very few candidates on the floor, adding value to their organization.
Teki thought, there has to be a better way of doing things.
There has to be a way for employers to find the talent they need when they need it.
There has to get these workers to work on better terms.
There has to be a way to create on-demand employment.
But that's stupid.
"Job boards are fine"
"Staffing firms serve a purpose."
"That's just the way things are."
Amid the criticism, and with the words of Richie Norton in his ears, our team decided to "lean into" the problem "in a smart way" and worked to develop TempSumo. The mobile platform connecting job seekers to hundreds of job opportunities all from their smartphone and helping employers fill shortages and hire pre-screened reliable candidates on-demand.
5 months, many late nights, and one release later the idea is now a reality.
As Norton says, "It all starts with a tiny, stupid idea, then one thing leads to another, and suddenly, you find something amazing" and amzing it is to see that idea come to life.
